Window Frame Materials
Frame material determines how a window performs over its lifespan – thermally, structurally, and in terms of maintenance demands. NJ’s climate makes this decision more consequential than in more moderate states: freeze-thaw cycling, summer humidity that pushes into the 80s, and salt air along the coast all stress frame materials differently. One material doesn’t win across all conditions.
Vinyl
Vinyl is the default choice for most NJ homeowners – lower upfront cost, no painting, no rot. Lifespan runs 20-40 years with very low maintenance. Thermal performance is good but not exceptional. Vinyl expands and contracts more than fiberglass through temperature extremes, which can stress weatherstripping over time in NJ’s freeze-thaw seasons. Best suited for inland NJ properties where coastal salt air isn’t a factor.
Fiberglass
Fiberglass is dimensionally stable across temperature extremes – it expands and contracts at nearly the same rate as glass, which keeps seals intact longer. Lifespan runs 30-50 years. Thermal performance is excellent, with U-factors routinely in the 0.20-0.27 range. No maintenance required. The trade-off is cost: roughly 2-3× the installed price of vinyl. For coastal NJ properties, fiberglass is the clear long-term call. It performs well across all climate zones in the state.
Composite
Composite frames combine wood fibers and polymer resins into a material that performs like fiberglass and looks like wood. Lifespan and thermal performance match fiberglass. Maintenance is low. For historic renovation projects where wood aesthetics are required but the maintenance burden of real wood is a dealbreaker, composite wood-look profiles are the practical solution. Excellent suitability across all NJ zones.
Wood
Wood offers good thermal performance and classic aesthetics, but carries the highest maintenance demand of any frame material. In NJ’s humid summers and wet winters, unpainted or improperly sealed wood frames rot. A lifespan of 20-30 years is realistic only with consistent upkeep. Best suited for inland NJ properties with historic character requirements where regular maintenance is accepted. Not recommended for coastal exposure.
Aluminum
Aluminum frames are durable and low-maintenance but have poor thermal performance – they conduct heat and cold directly through the frame, creating condensation and energy loss in NJ’s winters. Appropriate for trim applications and some commercial contexts, but rarely the right choice for full residential window frames in NJ’s climate zone.
Window Types We Install in New Jersey
We install seven window types for home window installation projects across NJ and PA. The right choice depends on three variables: how much ventilation the room needs, the rough opening dimensions, and the architectural style of the home.

Double-hung windows are the most common type we install across NJ’s suburban housing stock. Both sashes open, which makes cleaning easy from inside – useful in multistory homes. The classic profile fits virtually any architectural period and doesn’t require structural modification of a standard rough opening.
Casement windows open fully on a crank hinge, which means the entire frame area becomes a vent. In NJ’s humid summers, that airflow matters. The continuous perimeter seal that closes when the window is shut also makes casement windows among the best-performing types for air infiltration – a real factor in NJ’s heating season.
Bay and bow windows project outward from the wall plane, creating a recessed seating or display area inside. They add perceived square footage and pull in significantly more light. Installing them requires a structural assessment of the wall – headers and framing need to carry the load properly. We handle that evaluation as part of the consultation.
Window Brands We Install in NJ & PA
We are an authorized installer for several major window manufacturers. That authorization has a direct practical meaning: manufacturer warranties only activate when installation is performed by a trained, authorized contractor following the manufacturer’s installation protocol. An unauthorized installer voids the coverage before the first winter arrives.
Andersen Windows is the most-requested brand in NJ renovation projects. The 400 Series fiberglass-clad wood is the standard for mid-to-upper renovation budgets. The E-Series handles custom sizing for historic homes and non-standard openings. Andersen offers a limited lifetime warranty on most products when installed by an authorized contractor.
Pella Windows covers the mid-range with strong energy performance. The Lifestyle Series composite provides fiberglass-level durability with a wider profile selection. Pella’s Impervia line is a solid fiberglass option for coastal NJ properties that need dimensional stability without the Andersen price point.
Marvin Windows handles premium wood and clad-wood projects. For NJ historic district renovations – Princeton, Cape May historic district, older Bergen County neighborhoods – Marvin is often the specification required to match original profiles. Limited lifetime warranty on clad exteriors.
Simonton and OKNA cover the value tier. Both meet ENERGY STAR Zone 5 requirements, both offer strong thermal specs relative to price, and both are appropriate for straightforward vinyl replacement projects where premium aesthetics aren’t the brief.
Our Window Installation Process
Every window project follows five defined stages. Our own installation crews handle all work – no subcontractors. A single window takes a few hours; a full home takes 1-3 days.
Step 1 – Free Consultation and Measurement
We visit the property, measure every opening precisely, and assess the condition of each existing frame and rough opening. Material and type recommendations come from this visit – not from a catalog conversation over the phone.
Step 2 – Product Selection and Written Estimate
You select window type, frame material, glazing package, and brand. We produce a written flat-rate estimate. Nothing proceeds until you’ve approved it in writing.
Step 3 – Permit Application
Where permits are required – which is most installations involving egress changes, opening size modifications, or municipalities that require them for all work – we submit the application and manage inspections. You don’t navigate that process alone.
Step 4 – Installation
Old windows are removed. Rough openings are inspected. New windows go in with proper flashing at the head and sill, insulation packed at the frame perimeter, and weatherseal caulk at all joints. Hardware is tested at installation. Debris and old windows are removed from the property.
Step 5 – Final Inspection and Warranty Handoff
We walk through the completed installation with you, check each window for smooth operation and air seal, and deliver the documentation packet: permit records, manufacturer warranty paperwork for each product, and the written workmanship warranty.
Single-window projects finish in 2-4 hours. Five to ten windows typically take one full day. Ten to twenty windows run two to three days, depending on floor access and structural conditions encountered.
Window Installation Warranty
Every project includes two separate warranties: our workmanship warranty covering the quality of the installation itself, and the manufacturer’s product warranty on the windows installed. Both are delivered in writing at project completion.
Warranty Type
What It Covers
Workmanship warranty
Air infiltration at installation joints, improper sealing, hardware failure from installation error, flashing failure
Manufacturer warranty – Andersen
Limited lifetime on glass, sash, frame
Manufacturer warranty – Pella
Limited lifetime on most products
Manufacturer warranty – Simonton
Lifetime on glass seal, limited on hardware
Manufacturer warranty – OKNA
Lifetime on most products
Manufacturer warranties are voided by two things: installation by an unauthorized contractor and modifications to the window unit after installation. Both create grounds for the manufacturer to deny any future claim. Our authorized installer status is what keeps the coverage active.
If hidden damage is discovered during installation – rot in the sill, compromised rough framing, failed moisture barrier behind the existing window – we stop, document the condition with photos, and present a revised scope before continuing. No surprises on the final invoice.
A free estimate from American Quality Remodeling includes an on-site visit, precise measurements of every opening, frame condition assessment, material and type recommendations, and a written cost breakdown. We deliver the estimate the same day or within 24 hours of the site visit.

Installed cost per window runs $300-$700 for vinyl double-hung, $600-$1,200 for fiberglass, $800-$1,500+ for wood, and $1,500-$3,500+ for bay or bow configurations requiring structural work. A full home of 10-15 windows typically runs $4,000-$20,000+, depending on material selection and project complexity. Final pricing depends on window type, frame material, glazing package, floor access, and whether any rough opening repairs are required.
Fiberglass is the top-performing material for NJ's climate across most of the state - dimensionally stable through freeze-thaw cycling, humidity-resistant, and appropriate for coastal and inland conditions alike. Vinyl is a practical choice for inland NJ properties on tighter budgets; it performs well through temperature cycling but degrades faster in coastal salt-air environments. Wood is appropriate for historic renovation projects where profile matching is required, with regular maintenance factored into the long-term cost.
A single window takes 2-4 hours. Five to ten windows complete in one day. Ten to twenty windows take two to three days. Bay and bow windows add time due to structural work. Permit inspection scheduling can add a day or two to the overall timeline if the municipality requires an in-person inspection.
Most full window installations in NJ require a permit, particularly when rough opening dimensions change, when egress windows are involved, or when the municipality requires permits for all exterior work. Straight in-kind replacements into existing openings may not require a permit, depending on the town. We assess permit requirements during the consultation and pull applications as part of our standard project scope.
Yes. The New Jersey BPU Clean Energy Program offers rebates for qualifying energy-efficient upgrades. The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (IRS Form 5695) covers 30% of qualifying window costs up to $600 per tax year. To qualify, windows must meet ENERGY STAR Zone 5 specs: U-factor of 0.27 or lower and SHGC of 0.40 or lower. We confirm energy specs for every product we recommend.
Installation involves full removal of the existing window and frame, with new framing and rough opening work before the new window goes in. Replacement inserts a new window unit into an existing, structurally sound frame. Replacement is faster and less expensive; installation is necessary when the frame has failed, when the opening size changes, or in new construction. We determine which applies to your project during the site visit.
For ENERGY STAR Zone 5 compliance in NJ, windows need a U-factor of 0.27 or lower. Lower U-factor means less heat loss in winter. Most quality vinyl and all fiberglass windows at standard price points meet this threshold. Triple-pane glazing pushes U-factor into the 0.15-0.20 range, which provides additional energy performance in northern NJ counties with harder winters.
Four clear indicators: drafts you can feel around the frame when windows are closed; condensation forming between panes (indicates failed glass seal - the insulating gas has escaped); operational failure such as sashes that stick, won't lock, or won't stay open; and visible frame damage, including rot, cracks, or warping. Any one of these warrants a professional assessment. Multiple indicators together usually mean replacement is more cost-effective than ongoing repair.
